Full Text Reviews:

Booklist - 05/01/2026 Rather than a guide to spider identification, this stylized offering from arachnid expert Beccaloni centers on 13 types of webs and the spiders that make them. Boldly colored backgrounds give prominence to detailed web designs stretched across double-page spreads. A few paragraphs of text describe each spider and its habitat, the function of its particular design, and what it hopes to catch. For instance, the redback spider in Australia builds a messy, tangled cobweb near a floor, which is ideal for catching crawling insects, while the dancing white lady spider in Africa’s Namib Desert burrows under sand to make its home and a trapdoor web. Occasionally, readers must turn the book on its side to learn about vertical webs, such as the ladder spider’s aptly named ladder web, which stretches up a tree in order to trap moths. Extensive back matter offers fascinating facts, including spider anatomy, a step-by-step guide to building an orb web, details on how spiders spin silk, information on different kinds of spider silk, and a brief guide to the featured spiders. Captivating indeed. - Copyright 2026 Booklist.
