Booklist - 05/01/2026 Benedis-Grab provides a feel-good story of friendship and second chances masquerading as a whodunit. The mystery of who lit a fire in Jonathan’s locker unfolds through the alternating perspectives of seventh-grader Dani, her ex-BFF Kate, new kid Liam, and bad boy Gabe. Jonathan has a positive reputation, and his school newspaper column “What’s the Buzz?” is incredibly popular, so who would try to hurt him? Each of the narrators has the potential of being blamed for the crime, so they work together to try to solve it before they get in trouble. Benedis-Grab incorporates cyberbullying, insecurities, and the art of apologizing to add depth to the characters, and the culprit is unexpected. Those who have read previous books in the Secrets & Lies series may recognize peripheral characters, but this is a new story line that stands on its own. Middle-grade mystery readers will appreciate that the book’s edgy cover and fast pace don’t come with the stress of solving a murder. Benedis-Grab hits a sweet spot with this juicy mystery that doesn’t veer into scary territory. - Copyright 2026 Booklist.
