Booklist - 08/01/2025 *Starred Review* A lilting biography of Harriet Tubman takes shape in this rhythmic recounting of Tubman’s life, from her birth through her final days. In short, powerful poems, dated with years of Tubman’s life, Brewer brings Harriet “Minty” Tubman into focus for a new generation as lyrical verses allow readers to embrace Tubman’s joy, her struggles, her wildness, and her courage. The incredible catalog of Tubman’s roles, from freedom seeker to Underground Railroad conductor to Union spy, is all preserved in poetic snapshots that sparkle with life. Brewer’s collage illustrations contribute a childlike and accessible feel to the text while still portraying important moments and adding historical context, such as including newsprint clothes on enslaved people to indicate their newsworthiness. A tour de force among poetic biographies, this focus on Tubman as a “force of nature” offers a dynamic way to engage with a popular historical figure that will slide perfectly into ELA and social studies curricula. Though an extensive number of Tubman biographies already exist, this one deserves to be added to your shelves and brought out for readers all year round. Upper elementary and middle-grade readers who enjoy Lesa Cline-Ransome, Carole Boston Weatherford, Oge Mora, and Jeannine Atkins will especially appreciate this unique offering. - Copyright 2025 Booklist.
