Booklist - 01/01/2025 This vivid and surprising second entry in the Are You Afraid of the Dark? series features three tales inspired by the folklore of Ghana, illustrated by three artists with disparate styles that come together for a consistently engaging collection. When Izzy discovers that her newly secretive twin, Grace, is meeting with the Midnight Society in the woods at night, the conflict can only be solved with a scare-off: if Grace wins, Izzy must keep quiet, but if Izzy wins, Grace must leave the Society for good. Sharp-toothed monsters pose a threat to dishonest students in The Tale of the Bushwalkers, and The Tale of the Spirit Drum raises questions about the real price of getting what you wish for. The third story, The Tale of the Sinister Sisters, takes a legitimately terrifying turn when two malevolent spirits attempt to pit the sisters against each other. No neatly tied-up ending awaits the Midnight Society despite the success of the scare-off, and the third volume cannot reach readers’ hands soon enough. - Copyright 2025 Booklist.
