School Library Journal - 02/27/2026 Gr 5–8—Superheroes and villains in Cape City have largely disappeared, but on a seemingly normal day, middle schooler Zander assumes superhero abilities when he's caught out in a storm with a crystal that mysteriously ends up at his door. His new super speed changes his luck at school, including his ability to speed-read and win the prizes typically awarded to longstanding victor, Tanya May. Vibrant colors and Zander's priceless physical comedy entertain readers who want a dose of superhero intrigue, action, and adventure in graphic novel format. Surprisingly three-dimensional, Zander's larger family story and school relationships factor into the storytelling for a well-rounded first volume that provides ample setup, conflict, and a resolution that can build into subsequent stories. Zander is a character to root for, just like his sidekick dog with goggles. The panel layout and movement play a large role in its readability for beginner graphic novel readers, but the complexity of the worldbuilding will capture the seasoned comic fans. Each page shines with detail as the villains try to gain a foothold, making this a classic tale of good versus evil for the average kid-turned-superhero. Zander is white, Tanya May is Black, and there is diversity seen among background and secondary characters. VERDICT Cody is no stranger to graphic novels for young readers, and this is another easy sell with visual interest and a solid story.—Alicia Abdul - Copyright 2026 Publishers Weekly, Library Journal and/or School Library Journal used with permission.
