School Library Journal - 05/01/2025 Gr 1–4—When Steve the horse smells the first flower of spring, he knows it's time to race. To make things fair, the other animals have made it a relay race, and paired the fast-running horse up with Turtle, Duck, and Snail. Taking it in stride, Steve uses his knowledge of winning races to become their coach. Collier continues her series about this energetic horse named Steve with a focus on teamwork and making the most of your current situation. Expanding on the lesson of "slow and steady wins the race" from the "Tortoise and the Hare," Steve shows us that being "born to run" doesn't always make you the best racer. VERDICT A triumph of teamwork brings a classic story back to modern readers by showing the benefits of our differences. - Copyright 2025 Publishers Weekly, Library Journal and/or School Library Journal used with permission.
