Summary:

Booklist - 03/01/2025 Despite a scholarship to a promising science academy in another city, Lily is desperate to stay in her hometown, Crater, where the power inexplicably shuts off and the buildings are old and drafty—i.e., an absolutely perfect environment for ghosts. When Lily and her friends stumble into an abandoned mansion and find instructions for constructing a mystical ghost trap, they quickly start biking all over town, trapping ghosts in old bottles and jars. One ghost is being particularly helpful, and Lily believes following its guidance could keep her from having to move away, but can the kids trust it? Colossal’s goggle-eyed, hugely expressive characters, including the ghosts, which look like partially deflated balloons, amp up the cartoon atmosphere. The silly method by which the kids learn about the ghosts’ past lives (briefly swallowing them!) playfully lightens the eerie tale as well. Beneath all the comical adventures, however, is a thoughtful exploration of the fear of change and consequences of trying to prevent change from happening. Middle-graders who like ghost stories with plenty of laughs will appreciate this rollicking adventure. - Copyright 2025 Booklist.
