School Library Journal - 06/01/2026 Gr 1–3—"This is a story about justice… This is not a story about jealousy at all," and thus Broom tells of being ignored as everyone pays attention to the witch who rides them. Broom uses a wish potion to change, but becoming a star does not bring recognition. The next wish leads to the Broom of Doom. Now, Broom has the attention they want and the expectation that they can brew the witch's potions. The attention turns to animosity when the potions turn out wrong, and Broom reverts to just being a broom. The last potion suddenly creates a sensation, and they turn into the Broom of Va-Va-Voom. Broom is drawn with stick arms, eyes, a nose, and a mouth that animate their complaints and transformations. The printing style of the text looks handwritten; some phrases are in all caps, declaring Broom's opinion. Most of the drawings fill the page in muted tones varying between single pages and spreads. A window in the witch's house shows crowds of monstrous creatures waving signs of adulation or dismay. The dominant colors change from brown for broom to black for star, to green-yellow for doom, and pink-purple tones for voom. VERDICT A strong first buy; Broom's need for recognition and attention resonates in this charming variation of The Sorcerer's Apprentice.—Tamara Saarinen - Copyright 2026 Publishers Weekly, Library Journal and/or School Library Journal used with permission.
