Other - 03/03/2025 In this series opener from the creators of the Ladybug Girl books, the eponymous protagonists make their respective debuts at a city’s dog park. Readers see instantly that the two hounds couldn’t be more different: scowling bulldog Elvis digs in his heels, while effusive, retriever-like Romeo "couldn’t wait to make a new friend." Given the array of pooches to choose from, shown in digital artwork that offers the feel of charcoal and watercolor, Romeo naturally picks none other than grumpy Elvis. Via a series of comics-style panels, Romeo dashes in and out of frame, perceiving a spirited game of tag with Elvis, while the bulldog remains firmly planted. But when a Frisbee zooms straight at Romeo’s head, Elvis-perhaps in spite of himself-saves the day with a spectacular leap and catch. The heroic act proves an icebreaker, and the two are soon dreaming up the world’s finest sandwich, running for treats with the dog park’s other denizens, and lolling in the grass together. It’s a big-personality friendship story that shows how it’s possible to recover from a ruff start. Human characters are portrayed with various skin tones. Ages 4-8. (May) - Copyright 2025

Booklist - 05/01/2025 Elvis, a pudgy bulldog, and Romeo, a mutt of mixed heritage, are each visiting the dog park for the first time. Elvis is reluctant to take part in the new venture, while Romeo is enthusiastically looking forward to making a friend. Upon entering the park, they are met by a large group of various breeds, and Romeo begins his search for a buddy. He, of course, zeroes in on grumpy Elvis, though it's clear from the start that the two don’t enjoy the same things. Romeo eagerly attempts to engage Elvis in play, but the disgruntled bulldog will not participate. By way of a misguided Frisbee, the dogs discover they do have something in common that is near and dear to their hearts (and stomachs), and the rest is history. Much of the story is delivered through color-coded speech bubbles that indicate which dog is communicating. The multicultural group of pet owners and wide variety of dogs fill the park with color and movement in the charming, digitally created artwork, which is a joy to peruse. - Copyright 2025 Booklist.
