Booklist - 07/01/2025 *Starred Review* This buddy comedy about two teenage boys who form an unconventional friendship is a surprisingly authentic reflection on what life can be like for a neurodivergent teenage boy. High-schooler Kobayashi is teetering on the edge of failure: he's unable to focus in school, constantly making mistakes at his part-time job, and giving off a facade of not caring. The truth is, however, he can't seem to keep up with everyone around him. When transfer student Uno arrives, he's seemingly an oddball. But as Kobayashi gets to know Uno more, he realizes that Uno's difficulties have a lot of similarities to his own, and the two boys form a friendship built on mutual learning and care. Doronoda excels at depicting Kobayashi's and Uno's neurodivergences in an electrifying, resonant way without using the labels ADHD or autism. Uno's experiences with sensory overload and meltdown are represented visually, with shaky, jarring lines and crowded pages that truly capture what those moments can feel like. Overall, the art has a visual coolness and openness that sets Doronoda's style apart from other manga in this space. Doronoda's choice to focus on boys' friendship in high school is also refreshing—and what many readers are looking for on the shelves. Humorous and heartfelt, this is an essential manga for any collection that serves teens. - Copyright 2025 Booklist.
