Booklist - 01/01/2026 *Starred Review* Ethan and his best friend, Ricky, live in a small trailer park on the edge of Millbrook. With middle school just around the corner, the only thing Ethan’s been worried about is getting lost on the first day. But their new school also serves a wealthier neighboring town, and suddenly Ethan feels embarrassed by his family's poverty—and that feeling only gets worse when rude rich kids at his school shame him for things like getting free school lunch. When Ricky starts hanging out with some mean kids, and Ethan makes friends in a club for his favorite deck-building game, Bio Battle, they drift apart, but soon they realize that the school dynamics aren't as simple as the haves and have-nots. Feuti tells a thoughtful story about wealth inequality in middle school, showing how Ethan and Ricky are each judged differently for where they live, and the tricky task of navigating new friendships when feelings get hurt. Crisp, expressive artwork in a muted palette nicely telegraphs the complex emotional realities Ethan and his friends experience, especially as Ethan resourcefully finds confidence to be himself. Plenty of kids will be able to relate to Ethan's story in this absolute must-have for middle-schoolers that will be at home on a shelf next to Raina Telgemeier, Jerry Craft, and Shannon Hale. - Copyright 2026 Booklist.
