Booklist - 05/01/2025 Chloe is incredibly frustrated with her older sister, Lacey, who insists on running their family business in a very particular way—a way Chloe thinks is uselessly out of date. The sisters are some of the only remaining weavers of the thread that constitutes a soul, made from a plant called breth. While real breth becomes scarcer and more expensive, the megacorporation that runs nearly everything, MCorp, is pushing its synthetic Digibreth, a manufactured alternative. Chloe sets off for the city in search of new suppliers. Before she can, though, she makes the dark discovery that those who consume Digibreth are doomed to suffer a horrific eternal disconnection from the chain, the natural cycle of things. As Chloe grasps what a precious resource real breth is and discovers dark secrets about the origins of Digibreth, there are no easy answers, and choosing who to trust is always a dangerous game. Strong lines and mostly monochromatic, shifting color palettes create solidity amid the complexity of the narrative; the sisters’ world is pleasantly both geometric and whimsical. - Copyright 2025 Booklist.
