Booklist - 08/01/2024 When her father dies without his lucky baseball bat, Alex becomes incredibly superstitious and eventually travels to the magical world of Haphaven to change her luck and her family’s fate. The personification of the abstract concepts of luck and fortune and the modernization of the setting give the whole piece a Rick Riordan feel, but instead of just one specific culture like Riordan typically focuses on, this feels more like a general commentary on collective superstitions as a whole and why people partake in them. Harper finds a great balance by fleshing out an fantasy world with complex characters that teen readers might looking for, while still making it kid friendly and at times silly enough for younger audiences to enjoy as well. The art style similarly strikes that balance too, making the environment and character design gritty and sketch heavy, while still highlighting the funny moments and the emotional heart of the piece. A sweet story and an engaging premise. - Copyright 2024 Booklist.
