Publishers Weekly - 03/23/2026 Wind whisks an orca-shaped pool floaty on a wild outing in Hatch’s droll tale, loosely inspired by a true story, per an author’s note. Inflatable whale Finn loves summertime days spent being "jumped on, dived over, and raced" in his human family’s heated pool, but the play can be noisy and tiring, and he sometimes wonders what’s on the other side of the fence. After a storm sweeps him sky-high, he lands in open water ("a different kind of pool") where he appears to swim with a pod of orcas before drifting into the arms of unfamiliar children playing at the beach. Missing "the comfort of his warm pool, his floaty friends, and the children he loved," Finn longs for home, while the human family distributes "lost" posters. Another windstorm quite literally leaves the toy deflated until discovery yields a final happy reunion. Hand-painted textures provide the digital artwork with a rough, chalky feel. This imagination-fueled adventure conveys a buoyant sense of possibility. Human figures are depicted with varied skin tones. Ages 4-8. (May) - Copyright 2026 Publishers Weekly used with permission.

School Library Journal - 04/17/2026 PreS-Gr 3—Finn, a pool floaty resembling an orca, spends his summer in a backyard pool playing with the children and his fellow floaties. Finn has a good life, but sometimes at night, he wonders what is on the other side of the backyard fence. One night, some intense gusts of wind blow Finn high into the air and into an adventure. Finn encounters many exciting experiences, but he misses home and the children he loves. The wind keeps blowing Finn until he gets stuck, deflated in a tree in the yard beside his old house. The family next door patch Finn up and return him home to their very excited neighbors. While Hatch's illustrations provide a vibrant setting and an adorable protagonist, Finn's story falls flat, relying on a weakly communicated "there's no place like home" theme that doesn't differentiate this from others like it. A note reveals this book is based loosely on the author's real-life missing-and-found floaty, which is arguably the most interesting aspect of this story. A secondary purchase for large collections. VERDICT While the illustrations charm, this "no place like home" tale about a wayward pool float lacks the narrative depth to make it a priority purchase.—Kasey Swords - Copyright 2026 Publishers Weekly, Library Journal and/or School Library Journal used with permission.

Booklist - 05/01/2026 An inflatable pool orca named Finn lives in a heated backyard pool but wonders what lies “on the other side of the fence,” setting him on an unexpected adventure that ultimately deepens his appreciation for home. Children delight in playing with Finn, and when a windstorm lifts him from the yard and carries him away, the sudden journey feels exhilarating at first. After he lands in the vast ocean, however, the contrast in scale and setting gently underscores how much he belongs in the familiar warmth of his backyard pool. Themes of belonging and contentment emerge naturally through tender, understated storytelling. The illustrations, created digitally using hand-painted textures, have a soft, hand-drawn appearance. Expressive artwork conveys movement beautifully, with splashing water and swirling wind reinforcing both the excitement of flight and the calm of return. Several spreads incorporate graphic-novel-style panels—some with text, others purely visual—adding pacing and visual interest. A brief author’s note explains that the story is loosely based on true events, lending additional charm. - Copyright 2026 Booklist.
