Booklist - 09/15/2024 An Irish writer, designer, and illustrator known for his board books and picture books, Haughton now offers older kids an intriguing nonfiction book on the history of information. The discussion begins with the development of human languages, covers topics such as advances in drawing, writing, science, computers, and news and newspapers over time, then concludes with the beginnings of artificial intelligence. While the time frame is lengthy and the subject is enormous, Haughton breaks each topic into smaller parts and discusses specific concepts, events, and movements in relatively short paragraphs, accompanied by illustrations created with simplified forms and bold, vibrant colors. The text's coverage is global; the writer's ability to express ideas and summarize a variety of advances made by significant individuals, cultures, and religions throughout history is impressive. It’s a rare child who would read such a broadly informative book from cover to cover, but many would enjoy browsing through the pages, zeroing in on topics of interest, and learning more about them.
