Booklist - 02/01/2026 Paloma idolizes her heroic dad, especially when he leads a union strike against his employer, Selva, an Amazon-like e-commerce company that is not only mistreating its workers but also destroying the local environment. Julio, her ex-boyfriend, is still reeling from the loss of his father, a victim of the environmental impact and Paloma’s dad’s close friend. Both see a path forward in a scholarship that will accomplish Paloma’s dream of being nationally published and provide Julio enough money to go to college to learn how to use plants to mitigate the effects of Selva and companies like them. But their ambitions soon land Paloma in front of an impossible choice between her deep-rooted principles and Julio’s future. Brilliantly crafted with narrative echoes of itself, Ixta’s sophomore work asks difficult questions about scales of social justice and loyalty to one’s own morals. Ixta delivers a complex and all-too-relevant environmental novel suitable for fans of Brianna Craft’s We Don’t Have Time for This (2024). - Copyright 2026 Booklist.
