Booklist - 08/01/2025 Young CeeCee (her white enslavers called her Cecelia, then shortened it to Celia, and then to CeeCee) lives in a big house on a plantation in Maryland with two spoiled white girls. CeeCee has to do all the work, never gets any pretty clothes, and gets locked in the attic whenever she’s caught looking at a book or listening to the girls’ lessons. Binty, the plantation cook, is CeeCee’s champion and fairy godmother, feeding her golden biscuits and telling her stories about Moses, a prince who saved his people and led them to freedom. CeeCee dreams about finding her own knight to take her to freedom, and, with Binty’s help, she starts making plans. It takes CeeCee months to save enough clothing scraps to make herself a proper dress, but finally the time comes, and CeeCee sets out to meet Moses at midnight. Moses comes but isn’t a prince; instead, she meets the legendary Underground Railroad conductor Harriet Tubman. Expressively illustrated, with rich back matter, this engaging, fact-based refashioning is a worthwhile contribution to the Cinderella canon. - Copyright 2025 Booklist.
