Booklist - 06/01/2026 Award-winning authors Erin Entrada Kelly and Eliot Schrefer team up for an unnerving middle-grade tale. After purposefully fracturing her sister’s kneecap, 11-year-old Sofia Mendoza is sent to camp Forestjaw, The camis sponsored by her favorite world-building game, Sandbox, and home to robotic vultures called razors, an ominous “NPC” entity, and atrocious meals. There are six other kids and each camper must rank themselves to win a prize of one million credits towards Sandbox; the lowest ranked suffers an unknown consequence. Sofia’s behavior becomes disillusioning as she manipulates everyone so she can win the prize. Time will tell if there is a silver lining to her deplorable actions. Kelly and Schrefer have developed an atypical storyline with a wicked protagonist; yet readers will find it difficult to look away from Sofia’s transgressions. Fans of The Hunger Games series, Minecraft, and fast-paced terror will find this story appealing, as the other kids face various obstacles and band together to prevent ranking each other. Readers will eagerly await the second installment, which is soon to be released. - Copyright 2026 Booklist.
