Booklist - 08/01/2025 Two generations revisit a time of horror in our too-recent past in this historical fiction about the Guatemalan genocide. José and Charlie know very little about their parents’ lives in Guatemala, other than that their father has left them to return and their mother can’t even talk about it. José, like many people, is completely unaware that a genocide had taken place in the 1980s until he learns of the former military leader’s trial. Seeking answers about his family’s past, José starts to educate himself and makes a life-changing connection for his family. Told from José’s present-day perspective and through his mother’s memories of escaping the slaughter of her village, this graphic novel takes readers into the villages of Guatemala and the scorched-earth policy carried out against the Indigenous populations there. Readers will be reminded of the importance of telling the stories of those the world seeks to forget. Images of death and gun violence are present, as would be expected. An educational and empathetic narrative of an injustice too few know of. - Copyright 2025 Booklist.
