School Library Journal - 05/01/2026 PreS-Gr 3—Allie the Alpaca wants to have a perfect day, in which everything goes right but learns that not-so-perfect days are also a part of life. Allie has a positive attitude—she "greets each day with a grin." She wants to finally learn to tie her shoes, paint a beautiful picture, and bake delicious cookies. Alas, none of those things go as planned, making Allie wonder, "Why does EVERYTHING have to be so DIFFICULT?" Plus, she still must do her homework, wash the dishes, and try to calm herself by knitting. She gets advice from all sides and realizes she must keep trying. With not-so-subtle inspiration from the classic Judith Viorst book Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day, Allie does indeed have a bad day, but unlike in Alexander's case, the author doesn't just leave it at that. While the buildup is fun, with lighthearted illustrations supporting this, the payoff includes a bit too much well-intentioned advice. VERDICT An overly instructive take on what it means to have a bad day, this offers fun moments and a truly sympathetic heroine.—Sue Morgan - Copyright 2026 Publishers Weekly, Library Journal and/or School Library Journal used with permission.

Publishers Weekly - 05/04/2026 An alpaca who’s desperate for a no-drama day drives this solid take on the gap between expectations and reality from Wagner Lloyd (How to Catch Some Zzzs) and Snowdon (The Terribly Friendly Fox). More ardent trier than perfectionist, Allie determines to dot her day with small triumphs, from learning to tie her shoes to baking cookies to share with little brother Alfie. "But everything is harder than Allie expected," and crisply inked, loosely color-washed vignettes show the protagonist discovering, and reacting to, the idea that her initial efforts don’t always pass muster. Striking a smart balance between calm, chummy reassurance and real sympathy for Allie’s feelings, concise prose offers a satisfying kid-scaled resolution: following two days of indignities, Allie’s turnaround comes not from external wisdom but from a shared laugh with Alfie after they both take a spill. The takeaway-that an improved day is one good giggle away-arrives with plenty of bonhomie. Ages 4-8. Author’s agent: Ammi-Joan Paquette, Erin Murphy Literary. Illustrator’s agent: Maddy Jeffery, Plum Agency. (July) - Copyright 2026 Publishers Weekly used with permission.
