School Library Journal - 05/29/2026 PreS-Gr 2—Enter the world of animal behavior, where odor is one of nature's ways of protecting different species and aiding their survival. Smells emitted from various parts of a creature's body can both repel and attract others. Skunks are the obvious culprits, but many other animals are presented here, including the stinkbird, musk ox, beaver, and vulture. Less familiar animals are highlighted, such as the sea hare, binturong, and bombardier beetle. There's also a page devoted to the corpse flower. Offensive smells like feces and decay are expected, but popcorn, curry, fruit, and flowers are more surprising sources of odors explained here. Bright, humorous full-page illustrations depict the stinky animal and some of its neighbors in the wild. The text is spare, with no more than a few sentences on a page. This book will draw in newly independent readers, story-time listeners, and lap readers. VERDICT An excellent source of information that will appeal to those who appreciate unusual facts and the slightly gross.—Gloria Koster - Copyright 2026 Publishers Weekly, Library Journal and/or School Library Journal used with permission.
