Publishers Weekly - 02/16/2026 In a whimsical picture book study that’s positioned as an homage to Ruth Krauss’s A Hole Is to Dig and Remy Charlip’s essay "A Page Is a Door," prior collaborators Maclear and Morstad (It Began with a Page) embrace doors as portals to play and possibility. Concise narration establishes doors’ varied forms and functions, while Charlip- and Sendak-tinged art buoyantly conveys the discovery and sociability that frequently begin at a threshold. In one scene, a child raps at a door, a bouquet behind their back ("A door is to knock on"); in another, a figure races around a pink spinning variety ("A revolving door is for going around/ and around/ and around"). As prose builds empathically ("Some doors may give you a nervous, fizzy feeling"), the focus shifts to portals offering access points to alternative perspectives, with dainty drawings presenting animalian dwellings, a shipwreck, and an inviting fairy home. Employing a mix of pencil, marker, and watercolor techniques across alternating b&w and full-color art, tidy drawings depict figures of varied skin tones and abilities alongside entrances of all kinds. As the storytelling shifts to the personal ("Someday you might have the choice of several doors to enter"), musing lines encourage readers to let curiosity propel them. In dialogue with some children’s literature greats, the creators meaningfully highlight doors as metaphors for openness. Ages 3-7. Author’s agent: Jackie Kaiser, Westwood Creative Artists. School Library Journal - 05/15/2026 K-Gr 2—In this quietly evocative picture book, the humble door becomes a lens through which childhood curiosity and courage are explored. With gentle nods to Ruth Krauss's A Hole Is to Dig and Remy Charlip's essay "A Page Is a Door," the text reflects on the many roles doors play in children's lives, literal and metaphorical. Spare, reflective language pairs seamlessly with expressive, imaginative illustrations that expand the concept of what a door can be. On a cold winter night, children peer through a glass door at the warmth inside; on a summer evening, a screen door in a tent lets in the breeze and the sounds of night. Some doors invite, while others intimidate, such as the threshold to a new classroom. Yet each holds the possibility of something meaningful on the other side. The artwork is particularly striking. A fluid palette shifts from warm to cool tones in harmony with the text, while the uncluttered page design allows each spread to breathe. The illustrations intentionally reflect cultural diversity while depicting experiences that feel universally recognizable. Though quiet in tone, the book offers emotional depth and rich opportunities for discussion, making it a strong choice for classroom use and a thoughtful springboard for writing and reflection. VERDICT A contemplative, visually engaging title that could be an excellent foundation for classroom discussion.—Louie Lauer - Copyright 2026 Publishers Weekly, Library Journal and/or School Library Journal used with permission.

Booklist - 05/01/2026 Doors serve many purposes and lead to places beyond our dreams, according to Maclear’s contemplative text. Doors open to best friends, the fresh night air, and possibly fairies. From the glass doors of a building to the revelatory doors of the imagination, Maclear delicately describes the types of doors, both literal and figurative, that exist and what possibilities await those with the courage to open them. What is more, the author shows readers how they might create their own doors, encouraging them to explore worlds and contexts that might not yet exist. Morstad’s unrushed art is an expansive complement to Maclear’s writing, showcasing everyday doors, suspenseful thresholds, and portals to imaginary realms rich with colors and vivid imagery. The illustrations are never busy and utilize white space to spur the imagination, dancing along the edge of Maclear’s prose. This will be a wonderful addition to all libraries and a fun celebration of the imaginative and transformative doors that reading guides us to when we open a book. - Copyright 2026 Booklist.
