School Library Journal - 03/01/2026 Gr 5–8—On the last day of their lives, volcanologists Maurice and Katia Krafft stood facing an ash flow rolling down Mount Unzen in Japan, an onslaught of hot ash and gas too powerful and fast to outrun. But this book is not about their tragic and untimely deaths; it is a chronicle of their extraordinary lives, from chasing their childhood dreams of studying volcanoes to meeting and falling in love as university students to documenting the secrets of volcanoes and educating others about their hazards. The narrative presents a balanced view of the couple's lives, recounting their many successes but also their failures, and the rhythmic text, written in verse, heightens the drama. Sidebars tell the stories of eruption survivors, offering readers a sobering glimpse into the devastating impact of volcanoes. The illustrations, colored in shades of red and gray and rendered in Roy's signature style, add excitement and complement the subject matter. Along with the author's own expertise in geology, a bibliography of credible sources and vetting of the text by scientists assure readers of the book's accuracy. Extensive back matter includes sources for further learning, details about the science of volcanoes, and tips for aspiring volcanologists. VERDICT Engaging and beautifully written and illustrated, this can be read as an adventure story or be used for STEM learning. Regardless, it will inspire readers to learn more about the Kraffts's lifelong passion and is an outstanding addition to any collection.—Danielle Sachdeva - Copyright 2026 Publishers Weekly, Library Journal and/or School Library Journal used with permission.
Booklist - 04/01/2026 This true tale of Maurice and Katia Krafft, married French volcanologists, begins at the end of their story. As the two scientists face an inescapable ash flow brought on by a recent eruption in Japan, the author wistfully wonders: Did they look back on the extraordinary trajectory of their lives that had led them to this moment? Readers are whisked back in time to the Kraffts’ respective origins, when the volcano-obsessed youths laid the groundwork for their futures as world-renowned scientists. They travel the world in matching red knit caps, conducting groundbreaking research and saving countless lives by distributing a film warning volcano-adjacent residents to take geologic activity seriously. The engrossing story, told in lovely lyrical verse, is a biography, science lesson, and history book all in one, but the urgent, engaging tone makes learning effortless. Text boxes break in to expand on locations, events, or terms, including fictionalized survivor stories. Excellent red-accented grayscale sketches add to the entertainment, and detailed back matter will aid further investigation. A loving tribute to science and scientists that educates as easily as it entertains. - Copyright 2026 Booklist.
