Booklist - 04/01/2025 *Starred Review* After almost bleeding out in a forest clearing, Hanan is once again faced with a familiar question: Are his new powers real magic or just another manifestation of his psychosis? Regardless, he’s sure that somebody else is going to get hurt if they get too close to him. Enter Pax, the slightly older boy who recently moved to Skenashogue, whose presence makes the presence in Hanan’s mind turn off entirely. Hesitant to connect at first, the boys find themselves drawn to each other, despite the secrets they each have. Even as fantasy elements become more pronounced, the reader never has complete confidence they aren’t just manifestations of Hanan’s psychosis, in part because Hanan himself is never fully certain. Stylistically, the prose is dreamlike while not being excessively descriptive; combined with Hanan’s unreliable narration, the entire book feels as though it exists fleetingly in a liminal space. The fantasy elements draw on Irish traditions and mythology as organically as the Irish phrases scattered without translation throughout. Although heavy concepts such as child abuse and self-harm are integral parts of the plot, they are just one part of the characters’ stories, never the focal point. Always demonstrating a healthy respect for mental illness and Irish legend, this atmospheric read is an all-around masterpiece. - Copyright 2025 Booklist.
