Booklist - 04/01/2025 In this detailed, comprehensively researched report of a lesser-known relationship, acclaimed YA nonfiction author Miller (Hanged! 2016) explores the life of Lorena “Hick” Hickok, who grew from dire circumstances in the Midwest into one of the U.S.’s premiere reporters in the 1910s and beyond. After working to put herself through college, Hick began her career as a driven reporter who could capably work alongside her male colleagues, despite being frequently held back due to her gender. Hick was also an important lesbian figure in women’s history, as exemplified by the relationship she built with Eleanor Roosevelt while covering FDR’s administration. Though it blurred the lines of her objectivity as a political reporter, Hick’s romantic relationship with Roosevelt defined much of her life and career. Miller relies on decades of correspondence to piece together the details of their relationship, and that story is punctuated by historical moments reported on by Hick. In exploring their love story, readers will learn more about Hick’s importance in politics, journalism, and queer history. - Copyright 2025 Booklist.
