Booklist - 10/15/2024 Art, advertising, and activism are the themes of this engaging picture-book biography of Sister Mary Corita Kent (1918–1986), a Catholic nun who used experimental art and explosive advertising techniques to persuade people to fight for social justice. The story follows Kent from her childhood love of making art through her adult work as a nun, teaching art to women college students in Los Angeles and then taking her innovative pop art to the streets and storefronts to galvanize the public into action. The illustrations, created with watercolors and digital tools, are brilliant at showing Kent's art and social ethic: the word “PERFECTION” is decisively crossed out on a page; huge letters form signs promoting peace. A wonderful double-page spread shows Sister Corita, habit flying, running with her students down a Los Angeles street teeming with advertising, the bold typography and colors of which she adopted. While this biography is aimed at the earliest readers, it’s text-heavy and uses references to historical events that make this an excellent choice for higher grades, too. - Copyright 2024 Booklist.
