School Library Journal - 05/02/2026 Gr 2–4—An engaging look at the backstory of a soccer icon. Messi is a soccer star, known and loved worldwide, his is a story of determination and grit. This Spanish-language narrative nonfiction title takes readers through Messi's childhood home and country and presents information about his lesser-known medical issues and career moves at the early stages of his soccer tenure. The colorful spreads depict the athlete as he grew up, on and off the field. The stylized illustrations have one glaring issue-the hair on every person seems to have been drawn with the intention of depicting light reflection but instead looks poorly rendered. The accompanying information in the back matter is ideal for die-hard fans who want even more, and this addition is reflective of Messi's highly decorated career. This book will be very well received. VERDICT A recommended purchase for all elementary school and public libraries serving Spanish-language readers.—Carolina Youssif - Copyright 2026 Publishers Weekly, Library Journal and/or School Library Journal used with permission.
