Booklist - 08/01/2025 Moving from Texas to Mexico City is too much for Diego to handle, and his parents’ separation, plus an itchy arm cast, only intensifies his grief. Upon stumbling into an antique shop, he meets Abuela Ximena, who tells him about a magic doll that grants people their desires, convincing him to find the doll and solve all his woes. On the day of the school field trip to the Isla de las Muñecas (Doll Island) in Xochimilco, Diego is guided by a voice to the “real” doll island, where Abuela Ximena and her brother, Don Jaime, reside. With classmates Itzel and Jandro, Diego discovers the Wish Doll’s motive of keeping them on the island forever, forcing Diego to be honest with his new friends. Ramos-Gomez’s debut has plenty of chills (and creepy dolls) to keep readers up at night. She delves into topics that will especially resonate with middle-grade readers, such as fathers pressuring sons to “man up” and parental separation. A great reminder about being honest when things get scary. - Copyright 2025 Booklist.
