School Library Journal - 05/02/2026 Gr 2–4—Amina, a young Syrian immigrant, struggles with issues of fairness in the fourth entry of this early chapter book. Not only does she get assigned to complete her science fair project with Tara, a girl she does not get along with at all, but her brother also receives a gift from their visiting tete (grandmother) that she feels should belong to her. She attempts to create a "formula" for fairness but ends up making mistakes instead. She takes her brother's gift, which results in problems at home, and her conflict with Tara almost makes them late to turn in their project. However, learning about Tara's life circumstances helps soften Amina's resentment, and they ultimately combine their dueling ideas into one project for the science fair. Amina's family relationships help her cope with her sadness over her grandmother's departure and missing her best friend. Jaleel's grayscale art, in spot and spread format, captures the narrative and adds charm. References to Muslim practices and frequent use of Arabic words help young readers relate to Amina. Back matter includes a recipe, an experiment, and an author's note; a glossary and pronunciation guide would have been helpful. VERDICT An empathy-encouraging series addition that centers a young Syrian girl's immigrant experience.—Heidi Grange - Copyright 2026 Publishers Weekly, Library Journal and/or School Library Journal used with permission.
