Booklist - 08/01/2025 *Starred Review* Welcome to the best-kept secret on Turtle Island! Sandy June’s Legendary Frybread Drive-In is mysterious. For some Indigenous teens, it appears in a moment of need—as a place to reconnect with family, resolve a conflict, or find courage or space to grieve. For others, it provides a summer job, a spot to meet up with friends, or a spark to a new relationship. Each story’s protagonist arrives at Sandy June’s in a unique manner: emerging from a storm shelter in Arkansas, following a path through Manhattan’s Central Park, or opening the kitchen fridge to find themself standing on the asphalt of the drive-in. They smell the food, hear an intermingling of languages or a band playing on the stage, and accept the welcome of an honorary grandparent. A mixture of award-winning authors and new voices uses this liminal space in surprising and inventive ways, creating a microcosm of the interconnectedness of modern Indigenous life, one in which community and family, past and present, encourage its young visitors to inhabit their truest selves as they look toward the future. It is also simply a terrific collection of entertaining stories—full of laughter, music, delicious food, friendship, and romance—that will appeal to teen readers across age ranges, identities, and interests. The anthology’s tone is consistently positive, and subtle connections among stories reward rereading. An essential purchase. - Copyright 2025 Booklist.
