Booklist - 07/01/2025 *Starred Review* In this historical-fiction manga, a young girl loses everything, only to be thrust in the midst of political intrigue during the time of Genghis Khan. In thirteenth-century Iran, Sitara spends her youth in the house of a scholar's widow, learning wisdom and science in order to be an educated slave. But when the Mongols attack, Sitara loses everything: her home, the people she loves, even the boy she cherished. Taking the name of the woman who took her in, Sitara, now called Fatima, moves forward by taking a place translating Persian texts to Töregene Khatun, the wife of one of Genghis Khan's sons. This pairing of two women in pursuit of knowledge and power will shake an empire. Beautifully illustrated with clean, bold strokes, this manga is carefully researched and nuanced in its fictional depictions of the people who were influential in this time. Fatima is an interesting lens through which to see this period, especially for readers familiar with this era in the Mongolian Empire. Intriguing, educational, and essential, this historical tale will be perfect for readers who enjoyed A Bride's Story and Orb: On the Movements of the Earth. - Copyright 2025 Booklist.
