Booklist - 05/01/2025 Dylan and Pops, his grandfather, have been on their own since his mom disappeared during a mental-health crisis. At 15, Dylan knows he can't—won't—live up to Pops' ideas of manliness. Their relationship becomes strained when Pops purchases hateful flags, displays exclusionary signage, and is pulled into the vortex of endless, vitriol-fueled news programs. Dylan finds solace in the woods, bird-watching and writing poems. An injured red-tailed hawk ultimately draws him outside his comfort zone and brings hope back into perspective. Stemple addresses mental health with a sharp focus on Dylan's emotional health as a result of his mother's struggle. Birds, poetry, and cars are the lens through which Dylan views the world; these themes are explored via the verse format, inviting readers deeper into Dylan's mind to see how he remains self-assured in his identity. The author's note addresses bipolar disorder and offers resources for those seeking information and/or assistance with mental-health care. While this novel is categorized as middle-grade, Dylan's age and actions make the story accessible for readers in high school as well. - Copyright 2025 Booklist.
