School Library Journal - 04/01/2026 Gr 4–7—This fast-paced story blends suspense, social commentary, and youthful determination into a compelling mystery as it follows Rook and Valory, two 12-year-olds from starkly divergent backgrounds who form an unlikely partnership. Rook Sagara is a homeschooled musical prodigy of Japanese descent who lives in a wealthy neighborhood. Sheltered and anxious, he worries he may be developing agoraphobia and rarely leaves his apartment. Instead, he spends his days on the balcony, spying on the residents of Faden House, an apartment building owned and managed by his mother. Valory, the white daughter of Rook's family's house cleaner, is his opposite. She attends public school, lives in the projects, is outspoken and brave, and struggles with boredom and authority figures. For thrills, she pilfers small items, a habit suggesting kleptomania that puts her at risk of incarceration. Told in alternating chapters, the novel effectively balances both perspectives and emphasizes the divide between privilege and poverty. Despite their differences, Rook and Valory share struggles with loneliness, mistrust from adults, and difficulty fitting in with peers. Their bond strengthens as they investigate a disturbing new tenant they believe is holding a young girl captive. The possibility that the adult in question is mentally unstable adds tension and genuine danger. While the book may feel crowded with challenges, the mystery moves quickly and offers plenty of twists. The author's diverse cast and realistic family dynamics add depth. VERDICT This quick, engaging read will appeal to those who enjoy suspense with heart and social relevance. A worthwhile addition to mystery book collections.—Lynne Stover - Copyright 2026 Publishers Weekly, Library Journal and/or School Library Journal used with permission.

Publishers Weekly - 04/27/2026 Two tweens band together to investigate compounding mysteries throughout their neighborhood in Tern’s heartfelt contemporary debut. White-cued 12-year-old Valory combats boredom by stealing, much to the consternation of her single mother, who cleans homes for wealthy Bostonians. Accompanying her mother on one such job, Valory nicks a valuable coin and is confronted by the homeowner, Mrs. Sagara. To Valory’s shock, Mrs. Sagara’s shy, reclusive son, 12-year-old piano prodigy Rook, takes the blame, an act that kicks off an unlikely friendship between the youths. Later, Rook, who is white and Japanese, confides in Valory that a long-empty unit in the apartment building across the street from his house suddenly seems occupied. Homeschooled due to his agoraphobia, Rook hesitates to uncover the mystery by himself, so he recruits courageous Valory into his inquiry. Struggling to adjust to her mother’s new police officer boyfriend and reeling from a falling out with her best friend, Valory welcomes the distraction. As she and Rook investigate, they become convinced that a missing child may be hidden in the apartment. Depictions of Valory’s emotional growth and Rook’s anxiety feel organic and sensitively wrought across alternating third-person perspectives that follow the pair. Valory’s wit and charisma inject levity into a hijinks-fueled romp. Ages 8-12. (July) - Copyright 2026 Publishers Weekly used with permission.

Booklist - 05/01/2026 Valory has a penchant for pilfering others’ belongings, but her latest heist threatens to get both her and her house-cleaning mother in trouble. When the homeowner (correctly) accuses her of theft, Valory fears that she’s toast, but the owner’s son, Rook, unexpectedly steps in to save her skin. A begrudging secret friendship blossoms, but as they spend more time on his beloved balcony, strange happenings in the apartment next door lead them to suspect that a kidnapped child is being held across the alley. With time running out and adults closing in, the unlikely pair will need to find a way to trust each other to save the day. The story has a thrilling Rear Window resemblance, as the agoraphobic Rook struggles to leave the safety of his home. The main characters take turns telling the story, allowing readers to experience the same moments from different perspectives, and both Valory and Rook feel relatable as they struggle with enormous expectations, changing households, broken friendships, and mental-health challenges. A marvelous mystery boasting high stakes, humor, and an understanding heart. - Copyright 2026 Booklist.
