Booklist - 09/01/2025 *Starred Review* Uh-oh—it seems the box of stories Anansi received from the sky god Nyame were actually prophecies, and now some scary bad actors are forcing young Nichole to find them and turn them over. As if that’s not stressful enough, Nic is facing being “sorted” into a new magic school while struggling with complex feelings about both her fractious family and her terrifying inability to control her immense new powers. Is she really destined to destroy the realm of her fellow Remarkables, as another prophecy suggests? In a second episode steeped, like the opener, in African and African American folklore, Thomas sends her troubled preteen with allies old and new from the high-tech, Wakanda-like land of Uhuru to meet merfolk, tiny fairies, and hulking giants in their hidden enclaves. The ending leaves her reeling from stunning revelations and game-changing twists but, for all her nagging doubts about herself and others, resolutely poised to chase after those elusive baddies. Readers will be on tenterhooks to follow her in the wake of this rich and rousing middle volume. - Copyright 2025 Booklist.
