Booklist - 08/01/2025 *Starred Review* Almark grew up amid a band of ruthless Northern mercenaries and trained himself in sword work to gain his father’s approval. On one mission, Almark’s father saved the headmaster of a magic school in the Southern kingdom, allowing the headmaster the opportunity to judge Almark’s aptitude when he was young. It was here that, he promised Almark admission when he turned nine, but endless Northern wars delayed his entry until his eleventh year. This beautiful introduction to Almark’s world provides detailed information on the politics and upheaval that shape Almark and offers immense character development and background information for the person Almark is becoming. This volume feels much like a prologue to a grander tale that will really take off in volume two as Almark finally begins classes, and the payoff for readers will be sweet since they were along for the characters’s difficult journey to Norkh Academy. Yunoki’s detailed illustrations, helped in part by Demizu’s splendid character designs, bring gorgeous depth to this epic-sized story of a young boy who has already lived so much life in his short years. Fans of The Faraway Paladin, Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End, and other pensive fantasies will enjoy Almark. - Copyright 2025 Booklist.
