Booklist - 07/01/2025 *Starred Review* Before he left for Bible camp, something seemed a little off about Noah’s secret boyfriend, Alex, but it definitely seemed like they both felt the same way about each other. Eleven weeks later, Noah returns home to discover that Alex has disappeared seemingly into thin air. Alex’s angry twin, Jamie; Jamie’s wise girlfriend, Izzy; and the boys’ childhood friend turned amateur investigator, Skylar, seem to be the only ones who are really even trying to find him, beginning by trying to figure out why Alex was seeing his and Jamie’s late mother, Desdemona, before he went missing. Though Desdemona’s mental health struggles may have been passed down to her son, there seems to be more at work than can be explained by the onset of Alex’s schizoaffective disorder, and his loved ones will have to be willing to brave their own journey away from reality to bring him home. This dense and immersive story positions horror and mental illness together with none of the all-too-common sensationalism or othering and with all of the necessary nuance. An honest and illuminating afterword ties up a searing and at times excruciatingly heart-wrenching and deeply affecting story, drawn with nostalgia and care in a retro, muted color palette. - Copyright 2025 Booklist.
