Booklist - 08/01/2025 Describing the fascinatingly varied eyes of dozens of animals worldwide, Anlauf also provides a lively view of animal behavior, evolution, and habitats. Chapters are by eye type—giant, talking, accessorized, adaptable, masked, teary, stalked, and more—with most chapters featuring 10–15 animal types. While familiar creatures are found here, most will be new to readers. The barbeled dragonfish, for example, is described as having luminous cells in its eyes. These emit blue light to lure prey and red light to “stealthily illuminate their surroundings—because hardly any other deep-sea creature can see red.” Konstantinov’s illustrations, created in ink and colored pencil on watercolor paper, of course prominently feature the subjects’ eyes, but the same appealing, playful detail that lights up those features extends to the rest of the animal’s bodies and some surrounding details—such as a chameleon’s fly-catching tongue. With its unusual focus, lesser-known animals, and discussion of what scientists do and don’t know about the animals in question and how they find out details of animal anatomy and behavior, this is a great choice for public and school libraries. - Copyright 2025 Booklist.
