School Library Journal - 02/01/2026 Gr 4–7—Advice and instructions for surviving outdoor adventures are provided in this colorful and informative volume. Readers learn to cope in many different environments, such as forests, swamps, mountains, deserts, and snow. Useful tips include putting together a first aid kit, how to climb a tree, what to do in an avalanche, and what to do in case of heat exhaustion. Interspersed are interviews with adventurers and scientists who share some of their own survival skills, such as how to create an emergency shelter in Antarctica and how to pack for fieldwork in the Sahara Desert. Eye-catching images accompany the informative text and make for content that young readers will find easily digestible. There are many books about wilderness survival available to the targeted audience, however this one is more comprehensive than most, covering a vast variety of environments and scenarios. Even if it is unlikely for the targeted readers to find themsleves in these harsh settings any time soon, this title will pull kids in. VERDICT Useful information and a wide range of wilderness scenarios with helpful advice make this a first purchase for libraries.—Margaret Nunes - Copyright 2026 Publishers Weekly, Library Journal and/or School Library Journal used with permission.
Booklist - 03/01/2026 This well-organized and accessible manual offers realistic and field-tested advice to help kids plan to survive just about any outdoor situation. There are helpful strategies for basic tasks (assembling first-aid kits, building a fire, pitching a tent), navigating various terrains (forests and swamps; lakes, rivers, and oceans; mountains and deserts), and being prepared at home for events like hurricanes, tornadoes, earthquakes, or power outages. There’s a robust team of 29 kids who propel the action through the image-rich pages, demonstrating proper techniques in multiple color photos supported by clear directions and numerous sidebars offering tips, shortcuts, and safety reminders. There are full-page portraits of conservationists and naturalists, quick-fact comprehension quizzes, and numerous “Decision Time” scenarios in which readers are challenged to make the right decisions to survive a catastrophe (avalanche, blizzard, quicksand). From survival hacks to nature facts, fending off crocodiles to pooping in the woods, avoiding bees or getting creative with duct tape, there’s an amazing amount of reliable information arranged in logical thematic units (along with a detailed index). - Copyright 2026 Booklist.
