School Library Journal - 01/31/2025 PreS-Gr 3—Berenstain adds another story to the emergent reader collection that retains the brand's traditional style. The cubs attempt a backyard camping trip without their parents, but Papa joins, claiming expertise. His incompetence is quickly revealed as he bungles every task, leaving the cubs to fix his mistakes without complaint. After a long evening, even the dedicated cubs retreat indoors due to the cold, leaving Papa asleep in the tent showing, despite all evidence to the contrary, that he indeed is a good camper. This continuation of the Berenstain Bears raises questions about its enduring popularity. While the story offers typical beginning reader content, its premise—camping with a boastful but inept father—feels unremarkable. The illustrations remain faithful to the originals. VERDICT While there is nostalgia for parents, the series relies on outdated gender roles and predictable plots; this may limit its appeal compared to fresher, more engaging content for young readers.—Amelia Kmiec - Copyright 2025 Publishers Weekly, Library Journal and/or School Library Journal used with permission.
