Booklist - 05/01/2025 *Starred Review* This handsomely designed, graphics-rich picture book about whales comes to the U.S. from Italian illustrator Bossù. Designed for middle-grade audiences, the book contains many pages featuring considerable amounts of text in fairly lengthy paragraphs. The coverage includes fresh, up-to-date information on a number of whales, such as how spumes differ (blue whales shoot one stream straight upwards, as high as 40 feet; bowhead whales’ spouts emerge in two streams and are shaped like giant V’s) and descriptions of cross-species interbreeding, possibly prompted by climate change stressors—“wholphins,” crosses between bottlenose dolphins and killer whales, and “nargulas,” produced by narwhals and belugas. Additional matter covers life cycles, interactions with humans, myths, and heaps of fascinating trivia. The thoroughly engaging text is supported by vibrant illustrations that spill across double-page spreads, befitting the grandeur and majesty of the subject matter. Bright primary blocks of color highlight captions and set off the numerous maps, diagrams, interior views, and special features; handy charts help visualize size and weight comparisons and contrasts. Considerable space is devoted to international whale conservation efforts. A visual delight, this cetacean-centric compilation offers solid information for researchers and fascinating illustrations that will enthrall browsers. - Copyright 2025 Booklist.
