School Library Journal - 08/01/2023 PreS-Gr 1—Simple, bright, and sweet stories comprise this four-book early reader series. In Chick-a-Boo, Mother Hen races after her speedy Chick who, with the help of barnyard friends, evades their parent with a game of peek-a-boo. Who Will Win the Cup? showcases a soccer match between elephants and rhinos, each of whom are determined to win. Big Tooth! dives under the sea where a misunderstanding among the sea creatures leads to the true discovery of who "Big Tooth" is. Park Shark delves into a story of Mama Duck and her ducklings seeing what they swear is a shark. The strongest in the series, Park Shark uses language to help readers develop understanding of the plot and engages them in the unexpected ending. Each book includes simple sentences, and the stories are easy to follow for even the newest readers. Illustrations are drawn with solid lines, letting readers recognize the animal characters in each book. The bright palette will be appealing to children. A quiz at the end of each story encourages readers to think more about what they have just read in order to answer the questions. VERDICT A quaint early reader series. Purchase where patrons are clamoring for the next step up from sight word books.—Maria Graybosch - Copyright 2023 Publishers Weekly, Library Journal and/or School Library Journal used with permission.
