Booklist - 04/15/2022 *Starred Review* This original graphic novel set in the popular Black Panther universe gives readers an inside look into the childhood of Prince T’Challa and Princess Shuri, two Wakandan nobles who share a father but have different mothers. In the beginning of the story, the siblings have a hard time getting along, but by the end, they realize that their complementary talents give them more strength together. While the whole of Wakanda is in preparation for the traditional ceremony of “Soul Washing Day,” a ritual to thank previous generations for their continued protection, T’Challa and Shuri have an argument that leads to the destruction of a sacred monument. At the same time, a deadly virus is unleashed that ravages the community, include Shuri’s mother, who falls dangerously ill. Shuri finds a book suggesting a mythical item called the star core hidden in the Wakandan heartlands can be used as a cure, and together, the siblings embark on a quest to save their community. While fans of classic superhero stories, especially those involving Black Panther, will appreciate the high-stakes action, inventive sci-fi technology, and cinematic artwork in a lush, full-color palette, this will also appeal to a broad range of middle grade readers who appreciate character-driven stories, world building centered on secrets, and the importance of honesty, communication, and understanding. Compelling as a stand-alone, but also a fantastic entry point for kids and tweens curious about the Black Panther universe. - Copyright 2022 Booklist.
