Booklist - 04/01/2026 Maisie McMeans finds herself staring down a long summer with her aunt Gertie in Heaven, Texas. Her dad recently died, and her mom’s alcohol issues have landed her in rehab, leaving Maisie feeling abandoned and untethered. As soon as she gets to town, Maisie befriends Walt Wise, who knows everyone and everything in Heaven. The two become involved in uncovering a massive scheme run by the mayor, who prioritizes money over town preservation. At the same time, Maisie discovers family secrets that seem (to her) to come from nowhere. While the book’s story line incorporates traditional coming-of-age and small-town-life themes, heavier topics weigh down its momentum. The tone fluctuates with Maisie’s emotions, which ring true to her situation and the events of her summer. More time is spent on feelings and reactions than plot development, so the nice bow at the end feels slightly rushed. Emotionally mature readers who enjoy character-driven stories will enjoy rooting for tender Maisie and following her ups and downs. - Copyright 2026 Booklist.
