Booklist - 04/01/2023 This adorable Spanish-language picture book follows Aurora and her fuzzy bestie, Nena. Aurora explains that she has moved to the U.S. and needs to learn English, but her dog only understands Spanish, so she uses familiar commands in her native language. The book employs a visual representation of a common language-learning technique, depicting little labels on everything around Aurora's house that translate the names of objects. The somewhat scribbly, stylized drawings are reminiscent of soft color pastels and have a charming, childlike look. A book for older children might introduce a conflict related to the language learning and bilingualism, but here everything is presented in a refreshingly positive light. Aurora is not only happy to continue to speak Spanish with her dog while she learns English in her new country, but she shares her Spanish with new people she meets and tries to teach new words in English to Nena. Simultaneously published in English as My Dog Just Speaks Spanish, this is a great depiction of what diversity and multiculturalism look like. - Copyright 2023 Booklist.
