School Library Journal - 04/01/2018 Gr 5–7—In this fascinating anthology, Lawrence has selected individuals who have left indelible marks upon history. Featured trailblazers include Beyoncé, Georgia O'Keeffe, and Mary Jackson. Lawrence also highlights many other women who aren't typically covered in history texts for this audience. Divided into eight sections, this collection provides one page of informational text and a full-page portrait for each of the 50 women. In addition, six are briefly highlighted with a small portrait and one paragraph description in the introductions to the sections. (Anne Frank and Hillary Clinton are among those to be found on various introductory pages). The author does a commendable job of selecting figures from world history, describing their accomplishments in an enlightening manner, and discussing the obstacles they faced. The striking illustrations are unique and vividly capture in color the essence of each woman. After reading just a few of the profiles, readers should feel motivated and inspired. VERDICT For its notable selections and broad range of subjects, this title is highly recommended for biography and history collections for middle school libraries.—Jeanette Lambert, formerly at Nashville-Davidson County Schools - Copyright 2018 Publishers Weekly, Library Journal and/or School Library Journal used with permission.

Booklist - 05/15/2018 The lives and achievements of 50 well-known and not-so-well-known women are collected in this anthology sure to inspire and amaze readers. Split into eight categories—art, history, politics, science, sports, music/film/TV, literature, and business—the volume showcases a diverse range of women from all over the world and from many different time periods. Readers will learn about Nakano Takeko, a female samurai warrior from 1800s Japan; Elena Cornaro Piscopia, the first woman in the world to earn a PhD, in 1600s Italy; Mary Jackson, the first African American female engineer to work for NASA; and Marta Vieira da Silva, possibly the best female soccer player of all time. Although the individual circumstances were different, each of the 50 women featured overcame many obstacles, not the least of which, in many cases, the challenge of being women in a traditionally male field. Beautifully colored, whimsical full-page illustrations add further insight into the interests and accomplishments of each woman. A valuable resource to inform and encourage young readers everywhere to reach for the stars, no matter the obstacles. - Copyright 2018 Booklist.
