School Library Journal - 08/16/2019 Gr 1–3-Two anthropomorphic tree frog siblings, Rafi and Rosi, explore their surroundings and learn about the traditions of their culture. This easy reader set in Puerto Rico begins with a glossary of Spanish words, followed by three short stories in which the frogs learn about three musical styles: bomba, plena, and salsa. In the first story, Rosi learns to dance bomba with the help of a mound of fire ants. In Plena Blues, Rafi is grateful to Rosi for helping him realize that pesky, younger siblings aren't always so bad to have around. In the last story, plenty of musical terms are introduced as Rosi and Rafi learn about the origins of salsa. Lively illustrations done in watercolor and colored pencil adorn the pages. Also included is a hearty introduction into the different musical styles. VERDICT Ideal for early fluent readers. Booklist - 12/01/2019 Siblings Rafi and Rosi are inquisitive and energetic coquís (tree frogs) who live in Puerto Rico and spend their days learning about their island’s traditional instruments, musical styles, and dances. The book (leveled as “Early Fluent”) begins with a glossary introducing readers to the Spanish words—and their pronunciations—that appear throughout the book. Three short stories follow that focus on various traditional Puerto Rican dances, instruments, and musical styles, all pleasantly illustrated with a warm, colorful palette. In the first story, Rosi is inspired to dance a rythmic bomba. The second story is about Rafi making his own güiro (a gourd instrument) so he can play it and earn money for a gift for his mother. The third and final tale is about the origins of salsa music and dancing. The book is appended with detailed facts about the topics discussed in the stories, including instructions for making your own güiro. A great addition to any beginning reader bookshelf.
