What begins as a traditional runaway story evolves into a unique narrative fueled by an ensemble cast fighting for vampire civil rights. Edgmon creates a well-conceived world whose damp, gritty setting feels like its own character and stands in marked contrast to Lux’s warmth. Anxious middle-graders in particular will find a comrade in Lux as he manages his worries while exploring his beliefs and identity. Lux also shows characteristics of being on the autism spectrum, such as when he struggles with social cues and spouts facts when feeling stressed during social interactions.
