School Library Journal - 04/01/2026 K-Gr 2—This early reader combines mystery and humor to show that friends can be grumpy but still want to help. There are many things that Cat does not like (hugs, jokes, and car trips), but a few that she does (snacks, naps, puzzles, and her friends). Despite her anger at things she cannot control, when her friend Hedgehog can't find his book, she is there to help. Cat follows ideas and clues around the school until she happily locates the missing book in Hedgehog's own locker, which makes her mad again. Throughout her adventure, Cat is polite and kind in her interactions and even models the counting technique to calm herself down. The book is divided into six short chapters that provide good pausing moments for discussion. Text is short and simple, with large font, and several words repeated frequently throughout. Illustrations are done digitally, with simple color blocking and black outlines, that go well with the cartoon-style word bubbles of the dialogue. VERDICT An early reader chapter book with lots of SEL discussion possibilities.—Virginia Pine - Copyright 2026 Publishers Weekly, Library Journal and/or School Library Journal used with permission.
