Booklist - 09/01/2021 This nonfiction picture book introduces Maltese journalist and activist Daphne Caruana Galizia. Young Daphne, an avid reader, finds inspiration in the writings and stories of others, including the value of inquisitiveness. Select moments from her life follow, from being jailed for participating in a protest to getting married and having children and, ultimately, becoming an investigative journalist challenging the “powerful and mighty” and revealing their “misdeeds” through her reporting. Though publicly harassed and threatened (and her dogs being killed), she perseveres, and her articles reach beyond Malta, motivating others to speak out for positive change. Soft-shaded, mixed-media illustrations lend dimension and sometimes extend the more generalized, straightforward text. Though little context is provided for Galizia’s endeavors, various causes are visually alluded to, including through newspaper headlines (“Women’s Rights,” “Unite Against Racism,” and so on). Appended information shares further biographical details, including on Galizia’s death, by targeted car bomb, in 2017. While more a broad overview than in-depth account, this may lead readers to learn more about its subject, while highlighting the importance—and, here, risks—of investigative journalism. - Copyright 2021 Booklist.
