Booklist - 03/15/2022 This rollicking, rhyming read-aloud riffs on the old expression “as snug as a bug in a rug.” The story expands in a satisfyingly wacky way, with a pug, a bug, and a slug battling one another to be snug on the rug placed just outside the pug’s doghouse in an idyllic Alpine meadow. Actually, there are two rugs: the pug’s and the bug’s. The bug sits, cozy as a hobbit, on his own miniscule rug atop the pug’s rug, equipped with tiny armchair, shaded lamp, and a teapot on the table within reach. Throughout, the rhymes are inventive (the pug is “aghast” and has to work “fast”), and the rug rivals’ words have great texture, like the bug’s sniffling “BIZZLE. BIZZLE. BZZZ! BZZZ!” The cartoon illustrations are loaded with comic detail, including having the pug, bug, and slug all look repulsive, giving an “ewww” impact to their fights. Their varied tactics and thought bubbles are hilarious. A fun way to build reading skills through exposure to rhyming. - Copyright 2022 Booklist.
